What makes a brand identity last ten years
Trends fade fast. These are the five qualities we look for in identities that still feel right a decade later.

Every few years, a visual trend sweeps through branding: gradients, then flat colors, then wordmarks in all-caps sans serifs. Identities built on a trend look brilliant for eighteen months. The ones built on an idea last.
1. It starts with a sentence, not a shape
Before we draw anything, we write one sentence about what the brand believes. If the logo, colors and type don’t all point back to that sentence, something is decoration.
2. It survives being small
Test your mark at 16 pixels, embroidered on a cap, and in one color on a cardboard box. If it only works on a perfect screen, it doesn’t work.
3. It has room to play
The strongest systems have fixed parts and flexible parts. Nocturne’s logo never changes shape, but it changes phase with every release.
Consistency isn’t repetition. It’s being recognisable while still being surprising.
4. It’s written down
Guidelines don’t need to be a 120-page PDF. A ten-page document that people actually read beats a perfect one nobody opens.
5. Someone owns it
Identities decay when nobody is responsible for them. Name a brand guardian inside the company, even if it’s only part of their job.
